Visiting any new city can be very exciting but at the same time a little bit daunting, especially when you just have a day to see that place. To help you on your mini-vacation, we have compiled a list of things to do in Minneapolis in 24 hours. The City of Lakes is home to abundant natural beauty along with several beautiful iconic landmarks and tourist spots.

If you have just one day in Minneapolis, it is best to arrive early in the morning, so that more locations can be covered. Also, wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as you might be required to do a bit of walking. The best way to see the city is to rent a car or hire a taxi. You can also take the Light Rail, but that would take more time to reach a destination.

Breakfast at 8:00 am

If you are arriving in the city on a Saturday, head towards Mill City Farmers Market (704 South 2nd Street) in Downtown Minneapolis for a delicious, lip-smacking breakfast. Do try their famous Indian spiced doughnuts and French toast. If you are arriving on a different day, then there are other places for a yummy breakfast like Keys at the Foshay (114 South 9th Street) or Hen House Eatery (114 South 8th Street).

Mill City Museum at 10:00 am

Before Minneapolis came to be known as the City of Lakes, it was renowned for its sawmills and flour mills. Mill City Museum represents that era and its mill workers. Built on the ruins of Washburn A Mill, it is an important part of the city. Check out the museums’ Ruin Courtyard and eight-floor Flour Tower. Also, enjoy the beautiful Mississippi River from the steps of Guthrie Theatre next to the museum.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts at 11:00 - 11:30 am

Home to more than 100,000 pieces of artworks, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is a haven for art fanatics. It is a top-notch art gallery that houses different pieces of works from all over the world and has many notable collections including the prominent Asian Art Collection. Since, the museum cannot be covered in just one day, it is best to take the leaflet at the entrance and visit all the popular works first.

Lunch at 1:00 pm

Matt's Bar and Grill (3500 Cedar Avenue) near Powderhorn Park claims to serve the best burger in Minneapolis– Jucy Lucy, which is essentially a beef patty with melted cheese slice. If you are in a mood for some sushi, head to Wasabi Fusion (903 S Washington Ave) or for Italian at The Old Spaghetti Factory (233 Park Ave #100, Minneapolis) or for authentic American cuisine at the Icehouse (2528 Nicollet Ave S).

American Swedish Institute at 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm

American Swedish Institute is a great place to visit for all ages. It is a perfect combination of a cultural center and a museum featuring various Swedish exhibits. Spend some time at the Twin City's only castle - Turnblad Mansion and wander through its opulent rooms while admiring the magnificent woodcarvings of the castle.

The Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at 4:00 pm

With more than 9,000 pieces of art, The Walker Art Center has always been known for being very diverse. It was one of the first art galleries in Upper Midwest region. Walker Art Center also houses a fine dining and an outstanding gift shop for souvenirs and home decor goods. Also, visit the stunning 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, located right opposite to the art center.

Nicollet Mall and Gaviidae Common at 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Nicollet Mall is a 12 block pedestrian mall that is home to numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and other forms of entertainment. Spend some time at this mall gratifying the shopaholic in you at stores like Macy’s and Target. You can even visit the famous indoor mall – Gaviidae Common, known for its several independent stores and discount shops.

Dinner at 8 pm

Nicollet Mall has several restaurants and eateries to dine in. 112 Eatery (112 N 3rd St) is known for its eclectic menu and comfort food. If you love French cuisine, then Vincent A Restaurant (1100 Nicollet Ave S) is the one for you. Zelo (831 Nicollet Mall) is another famous restaurant near Nicollet Mall, known for its delicious Italian food with an Asian twist. Other popular restaurants nearby include Manny's Steakhouse, Haute Dish and Barrio.

Explore Minneapolis’s Nightlife at 10 pm

Check out Minneapolis’s lively nightlife at First Avenue (701 1st Ave. N), which is known for its local music scene. It is also one of the oldest clubs of the city. If you are more into drinks and live music, then head towards Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant (1010 Nicollet Mall), known for its live concerts and jazz music. Aqua Nightclub and Restaurant (400 N 1st Ave) is another popular club in Minneapolis, featuring neon strobe lights, vibrant music and a massive dance floor.
